AiTA is developing a hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery system that combines glucose sensing and insulin pumping into a single wearable for patients with type 1 diabetes. To accelerate FDA clearance for the mobile companion app, AiTA chose to build the app on top of the open-source Tidepool Loop platform—requiring careful UX adaptation, safety-first decision-making, and a phased approach to onboarding and device control.
As Lead UX Strategist/Architect, I guided the user experience vision, aligned cross-functional teams, and and organized the team to design new flows essential for a medical-grade MVP.
Conducted competitive research and documented market trends, including educational materials for team onboarding

Evaluated Tidepool Loop UI and data model using xCode to determine reuse vs. redesign

Design an intuitive and trustworthy experience for a complex medical app—while integrating with Tidepool Loop, meeting HIPAA/IEC expectations, supporting FDA requirements for software that controls a medical device, and delivering an MVP quickly.
Key constraints included Bluetooth reliability, pump/CGM pairing workflow, data sync expectations, and clarity for first-time users configuring insulin settings safely.
Our team often had to move forward with flows and screens while engineering was still validating whether certain interactions, timing behaviors, or device states were technically achievable.
I organized stakeholder workshops to clarify business goals, user needs, system constraints, and regulatory expectations. This work established the product vision and high-level requirements.
The team analyzed OmniPod 5, Dexcom, and Loop to identify common practices for medical onboarding, insulin configuration, and device replacement flows. This helped define what could be safely inherited from Loop vs. what required new design.
Working from client interviews and diabetes-management patterns, I created personas, These informed critical usability and safety decisions, such as step-by-step onboarding, education, and error recovery.
Mapped the end-to-end experience—from app install to real-time glucose monitoring—including age verification, country selection, NFC wake-up, pump/CGM pairing, basal setup, and safety checks.
The team created missing views or redesigned unclear elements from Loop to reduce cognitive load and ensure alignment with expectations for regulated medical software.
Produced low- and mid-fidelity prototypes for onboarding, device connection, authentication, notifications, and troubleshooting.
These prototypes guided engineering, API planning, and architecture decisions.
